Totalitarianism is inhumane.
Totalitarianism is when a person or group of people have total control over a country or state. In Oceania, no one is allowed to disagree with the Party or Big Brother or else they will get punished. Orwell wants to avoid a world that is run with a government that has absolute power, which is why he wrote 1984. This novel was a warning to his audience in 1949, before the Cold War escalated, but it is still relevant today.

Mind control is powerful.
The Party has control over most of the people in Oceania because they manipulate minds. The telescreens that are installed in every home constantly streams propaganda that makes the Party seem better than it truly is. The devices also monitor every move and conversation to ensure the loyalty of their people. Since they know Big Brother is always watching, they are less likely to do anything against the Party. This mind control allows the Party to diminish free thought, which lessens the chance of rebellion.
