In George Orwell's 1984, Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth in Oceania, a nation ruled by Big Brother and the Party, where he changes historical records for the Party's control. Although he does not want to, Winston is forced to change history about the war between Oceania and Eurasia. He does not like the power that the Party has over memories. He and everyone else in Oceania is constantly surveillanced through telescreens, and they are not allowed to think outside of the Party's beliefs or disagree with Big Brother. Tired of oppression, Winston decides to rebel and write his thoughts in a diary, a deadly offence. He speaks with O'Brien, who is thought to be a part of the Brotherhood, a mysterious group of people who want to overthrow the Party. He also notices a woman who works with him and believes she could turn him into the Thought Police for his thoughtcrimes.
This coworker, Julia, gives Winston a not that reads "I love you," which was the start of their affair. Winston is weary of being caught while Julia is optimistic about their relationship. They eventually find a room they can stay in above a secondhand store in the prole district. They know they will have to confess each other's crimes to the Thought Police if they ever get caught, but they agree to never stop loving one another. O'Brien invites Winston and Julia to his apartment where they find out O'Brien was against them the whole time, and they get turned in to the police. After being tortured in Room 101, their spirits are broken. Winston no longer feels love for anyone except for Big Brother.
